Congratulations to May Queen 2010 Christina Nakhle, runner up Holly Wallace, and contestants Karen Gholam, Vanessa Kanaan, and Simona Sarkissian. A thank you to all the members of the judging panel, including last year’s May Queen, Georgina Farran.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Secondary Section
This has been a fruitful year. Students excelled academically and socially. A large number of our students were accepted to prominent universities. Special thanks to all students who promoted school culture and values. School occasions were fabulous with the presence of our young talents mainly Nabil El Khoury who won 1st prize in the May Festival “Talent Show”, Patille Madaghjian & Hala Nasri who  won 2nd prize, and Christian  Tabet and his brother Anthony who won 3rd prize. I wish you a joyful and restful summer.

Certificates Day took place on 5 June for non graduating students. We are proud of all our students’ achievements.

The “Learning to Serve Club“ was able to collect 610,000LL which is to be given as charity through the school. The money was raised by selling foods prepared by the students during the May Festival.

Intermediate Section
Brevet Students – The last day of their school final examinations was 18 May and this was followed by two days of in-school revision with the teachers. These students will begin their official Brevet examinations on 7 June and we wish them all the best of luck.

Trip to Jbeil on 20 May
– as every year, Grade 9 students had their last Intermediate field trip of the year with the destination being Jbeil. On the way there they stopped for a Lebanese breakfast, in Jbeil they wandered through the ruins, and on the way back to school they stopped for a fast-food lunch.

Certificates Day
– On 21 May students attended a special assembly in Dobbing Hall. Students received certificates for high achievement and/or great improvement in certain academic subjects. Many were the recipients of 1 or 2 certificates while some were awarded up to 9 or 10 certificates. Congratulations to all and good luck to those who continue to strive for these higher levels.

31 May – World No Tobacco Day:
to support this event and in an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking, all Intermediate students and staff wore white ribbons around their wrists on this day.

Posters depicting the hazards of smoking, which had been designed by the students in last week’s advisory sessions, were hung around campus to be judged by teachers. The winners will be announced this week.

A group of students from the Non-Smoking Club went down to the Annual “No Tobacco” National Competition at the Antounieh University in Baabda on 31 May at 5:00pm. They represented our school with their own exhibition of work that had been done to raise awareness throughout this year. We are very grateful to parent Suha Baaklini, who not only worked to prepare the Intermediate Non-Smoking club for this event, but also along with her husband drove the students to the event and stayed with them.

Amnesty Days
have been declared for the remaining days of school – any student showing good behaviour in this period will have a certain number of detentions or incident forms cleared from their file – good luck to everyone.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to grade 7 student Douha Knio who has been officially registered in SACEM (French Society of Music Composers).

Congratulations to Grace Abou Abdallah who was chosen as one of the winners in the “Al Arz Competition” for her literary writing. Her work will be published as a book, and she will be signing it at the UNESCO Building on 12 June.

Points for parents
– with the constant fluctuations in weather temperatures, students need to be always dressed appropriately. Many are coming with very thin tops barely covering their midriff and as a result experience nausea and headaches throughout the day. We also urge students to have a good breakfast because the lack of one can also contribute to nausea and headaches.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS
Elementary News
It is absolutely wonderful to stand up and boast with the pride of every parent and say, “Yes, these are our children.”  Students were totally fantastic on May Festival Day. The colours, the cheer, the dancing, the costumes, the fun, the variety, the grand pictures that children made for their parents, the beautiful sketches inspired from the 60’s… it was genuine talent. Thank you PA, and all those who made the effort to train, dress, and encourage every student to show their hidden talents. It was a successful day. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The UE Arnaoon trip proved to be a good experience for the children who enjoyed a full day of multiple skills testing.

They raced in canvas bags, threw darts, planted seeds, prepared to reforest bare mountains, rode donkeys, recycled papers, made ornaments,  learnt a thing or two about organic gardening and farming, made and raced their paper boats,  rolled and baked their own dough, and ate a well deserved  mankoushe with some cool lemonade when they got tired.

The students certainly enjoyed the bus ride as well. They appreciated sharing their food, their music, pictures, stories and songs together. The fellowship was great.

Quarter three awards were distributed to all deserving students, and all classes took memorable pictures displaying their awards.

Finally, the Elementary Section is nowhere near through with activities this year, even though we are so close to the summer vacation. Students participated in the Cross Country event and are getting ready for the Field Day competitions on 4 June. The swimming contest is coming up next, and the big day is drawing near. May the best team win!!!!

The UE Arabic contest was held on 1 June for the regular Arabic 6th graders. Good work everyone.

Drama classes are also busy preparing for an end-of-year production that will be a sort of a closing event for the year. We are looking forward to watching it.

Of course the graduating class is excited about their party and ceremony which will crown the year. It is our pleasure to remind you that the UE Speech Day is on the 25 June.  Congratulations to all and best wishes for the future.

Our LE students enjoyed their field trip to Arnaoon. This trip was a blast of fun.

All LE students glowed in their costumes while dancing during the May Festival. The dances were wonderful. You looked awesome!

Special Arabic students in Grade 3A did a project about trees. Also, Grades 3A & 3B wrote a descriptive paragraph about their friends. They enjoyed learning the strategies of writing.

Grade 1 students are learning about solid figures. They are enjoying learning new names. They also cut different shapes and folded them in half to show the line of symmetry.

In French, Grade 3 drew funny monsters to learn the body parts in French. Bravo!

Grade 2 students are learning about the time. Each student prepared his/her own colourful clock.

Infant Section
Playgroup teachers enhanced what they taught their students in the classroom by taking them to visit a small farm. They saw deer, chickens, ducks, geese, and chicks which they were allowed to touch. The children went into the hen house and saw a hen sitting on eggs. They finished off the morning with a picnic and a walk in the woods. A big thank you goes to the mothers who volunteered to accompany us and give us a helping hand.

KG I and KG II students shone during the May Festival. They danced to “Mama Mia” songs wearing beautiful costumes. I would like to extend a big thanks to Christina Gaspar, Dina Bechara, and Nahida Aswad from the PA for providing us with everything we needed for this festival.

KG II students will visit the first grade classrooms this week. The purpose of this visit is to familiarize the children with their surroundings for next year. Be sure to “get the scoop” from your child on this exciting mini introduction to first grade.

Friday, 11 June, is our Field Day. It is going to be an action packed, fun-filled, non-competitive day for all. Parents and staff make sure to cheer all the children on.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this past year. We have truly enjoyed watching each and every one of them learn and grow. They have been delightful! Have a terrific summer!
